After blowing his fourth save of the year, it appears Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin may lose his spot very soon. The 38 year old closer already has blown 4 saves on the year and is 1 for 5 in save opportunities this month. Franklin has an 11.57 Era with a staggering 2.12 WHIP in just the first few weeks of the season. After his most recent disaster on Sunday against the Dodger it appears it may be time for Tony La Russa to start trying out other options. The first guy in line for that position may be Mitchell Boggs who in his past 6 innings of relief has only given up 1 hit while having an 8/1 K/BB walk ratio. Boggs will likely get the first crack at saves, but other options are out there for La Russa to use in the 9th inning. Miguel Batista who recorded 31 saves for the Blue Jays in 2005 is also an option, as is Jason Motte. The Cardinals have several different options and could decide to go with a closer by committee setup until Ryan Franklin can get back on track, or until they can find a more permanent closer. No decision has been made yet on who will get the next save opportunity, but it is something a lot of fans will be keeping their eye on.
As for what possible impact this could have for fantasy baseball players. Mitchell Boggs should be a must add, even if he isn’t given immediate closer duties. Miguel Batista is a nice sleeper and is owned in only (.1%) of ESPN Leagues.
