MLB Trade Deadline: OFFICIAL Trade Recaps

Trade Timeline

7/30 to 7/31

Texas Rangers trade:
Tommy Hunter SP Age: 25
Chris Davis 1B Age: 25

Baltimore Orioles trade:
Koji Uehara RP Age: 36
Cash Considerations

Trade Review:
The Rangers were in desperate need of a Set Up man, and someone who could replace Neftali Feliz if he continues to struggle. Uehera was having a career year with the Orioles posting a 1.69 ERA in 48 relief innings. He bolsters a Rangers bullpen that needed help badly, and he will help them in the playoffs. The Orioles got two 25 year olds who have seen their stock fall in recent years. Davis was once a top prospect after tearing up AAA pitching, but has since been shut down in the Majors, by pitchers. The potential is still there for him to be a good power bat, and maybe a change of scenery will do him good. Tommy Hunter has been pitching out of the pen, after being unable to prove himself enough to make it into the roation. He has decent stuff and should slide right in to a weak Orioles rotation.

Winner: Texas Rangers

Cleveland Indians trade:
Alex White SP Age: 22 (DL)
Joseph Gardner Akron Aeros SP (AA)
Matt McBride Akron Aeros 1B (AA)
Drew Pomeranz Akron Aeros SP (AA)

Colorado Rockies trade:
Ubaldo Jimenez SP Age: 27

Trade Review:
The Indians are finally in the playoff hunt, and if they want to make it in the Playoffs they are going to need a Stud pitcher. After a historical 1st half in 2010 Ubaldo has cooled down in 2011 posting a 4.46 ERA on the season. He does play in Coors Field which hurts his ERA, and should see a slight boost in numbers playing in Cleveland. The Rockies pulled in 4 very good prospects. Alex White and Drew Pomeranz both could develop into important pieces in a rotation, and Matt McBride also has potential as a 1B. It was a solid haul for a Rockies team that looked like Contenders before the season.

Winner: Colorado Rockies

Fantasy Analysis:
Ubaldo Jimenez: Now that he is leaving the terrible Coors field, Ubaldo should see a drop in HR's and ERA. He has had problems with his velocity this year, which has also resulted in the stat drop. Now joining the Indians, he gets a slight bump in value, but is nowhere near his 1st half 2010 form.

Boston Red Sox trade:
Kendal Volz Salem Red Sox RP (Advanced A)
Yamaico Navarro 2B Age: 23

Kansas City Royals trade:
Mike Aviles

Trade Review:
The Red Sox have missed IF Jed Lowrie for awhile now, and were in search for a temporary fix. Aviles can play anywhere on the field, and help give the Red Sox another UTIL player. The Royals got Navarro a very young 2B who has struggled so far in the Majors. Kendall Volz is a RP in A ball who could develop into a nice late inning RP.

Winner: Kansas City Royals

Detroit Tigers trade:
Casper Wells RF Age: 26
Charlie Furbush RP Age: 25
Francisco Martinez Erie Sea Wolves 3B (AA)

Seattle Mariners trade:
Doug Fister SP Age: 27
David Pauley RP Age: 28

Trade Review:
The Tigers were seeking a young SP to add to their strong rotation, and also address their need for help in the bullpen. They did both things in acquiring Doug Fister and David Pauley. Fister has had a good season but has had to deal with little run support from the Mariners during his time in Seattle. Now in Detroit he is sure to pick up more wins, and David Pauley will serve as a late inning RP. The Mariners got 3 young players, 2 who are in the Majors already. Furbush should develop into a good RP, and Martinez has the tools to be a decent 3B.

Winner: Detroit Tigers

Fantasy Analysis:
Doug Fister: Fister was frustraded with lack of run support despite a 3.3 ERA on the year. Now in Detroit he should see a noticeable increase in run support, and will get more W's as a result.

Arizona Diamondbacks trade:
Zachary Walters South Bend Silver Hawks 3B (A)

Washington Nationals trade:
Jason Marquis SP Age: 32

Trade Revew
-With the Diamondbacks in need of another SP to continue their pursuit of the NL West crown, they traded for Jason Marquis, someone who can help bulster a rotation that already includes Daniel Hudson and Ian Kennedy. They gave up 3B prospect Zachary Walters who had a .309 average on the year in Single A. Marquis has a great history against the NL West leading Giants, which was also an added bonus for the Diamondbacks

Winner: Arizona Diamondbacks

7/29
Philadelphia Phillies trade:
Jarred Cosart Clearwater Threshers SP (Advanced A)
Jonathan Singleton Clearwater Threshers 1B (Advanced A)
Josh Zeid
PTBNL

Houston Astros trade:
Hunter Pence RF Age: 28

Trade Review
-The Phillies have been looking for another right handed slugger to add to their lineup, and Hunter Pence is the perfect addition. Pence was hitting .308 on the year for the Astros, and had 62 RBI's on one of the worst offensive teams in the Majors. He is 28 years old, a good clubhouse guy, and has shown to be a clutch hitter. The Astros have been looking to trade Pence for awhile now he is owed 25 million in 2012 and 2013. The Astros were seeking a big haul after trading away fan favorite Roy Oswalt last year for small pieces, and they got it. Jonathan Singleton and Jarred Cosart are the Phillies top 2 prospects, and should have a bright future.

Winner:  Philadelphia Phillies

Fantasy Analysis:
Hunter Pence: Pence was hitting .308 with the Astros to go along with 11 HR's and 62 RBI's, and now that he will be joining a strong offense, where he should see a nice bump in RBI's and R's. He will also get some added protection from the players around him. He will likely become a Top 20 OF the rest of the way.

Jason Bourgeois: Now that Hunter Pence is gone there is a very good chance Bourgeois will start seeing regular playing time in RF. Bourgeois is a contact hitter with speed and also a Run producer. In deeper leagues (16-20) team leagues he should be added, especially if you are in need of R's and SB's.. In individual OF leagues he already has eligibility in LF, CF and will soon be eligible as a RF

7/28
Chicago Cubs trade:
Kosuke Fukodome RF Age: 34
$4 million in cash

Cleveland Indians trade:
Abner Abreu Kinston Indians RF (Advanced A)
Carlton Smith Columbus Clippers RP (AAA)

Trade Review
The Indians were desperate for OF help after losing Shin-Soo Choo and Grady Sizemore to significant injuries before the All-Star break. They were interested in Carlos Beltran and Hunter Pence, but with both possibilities unrealistic they had to go with a smaller name. Fukodome is a free agent at the end of the year, and never delivered on the hype when he signed with the Cubs. He will give the Indians another body in the OF, until Choo or Sizemore are healthy. The Cubs had to bite 4 million off his salary but they got Abner Abreu a RF who has high upside because of his bat skills, but has yet to show any plate discipline. The Cubs also added Carlton Smith who projects as a relief pitcher in the future.
Winner: Chicago Cubs

Fantasy Analysis:
Kosuke Fukodome: Fukodome will move into the Indians starting RF spot immediately, and should bring a decent AVG to the team. He isn't much of an RBI producer or a power threat, but he will get on base, and should score some runs. He isn't worth owning in anything but AL-Only leagues

7/27

San Francisco Giants trade:
Zach Wheeler San Jose Giants SP (A)

New York Mets trade:
Carlos Beltran OF Age: 34

Trade Review
-The San Francisco Giants have been seeking a middle of the order run producer since Buster Posey went down early in the season. They found their sluffer in Carlos Beltran, and he should have an immediate impact on their lineup. Beltran has driven in 66 RBI's on the year and will form a nice 3-4-5 trio of Sandoval, Beltran, and Nate Sheirholtz. Beltrans presence now give the Giants a legitamate shot at making it back to the NLCS, and possibly even a return to the World Series. Beltran does have an opt-out clause at the end of the year, but the Giants will try and re-sign him. The Mets got a top prospect in Zach Wheeler who is known for his electrific stuff recording 98 K's in 88 IP on the year in Single A San Jose. He has a 3.99 ERA on the season and has struggled with his command, but the stuff is there to be an ace.

Winner: San Francisco Giants

Fantasy Analysis:
Carlos Beltran: Beltran will now go to AT&T Park, one of the msot pitcher friendly park's in baseball. He will likely see a drop in HR's but should see a steady increase in 2B's and BB's/ He is still worth starting in standard leagues, if only for the fact he is a great RBI producer

St. Louis Cardinals trade:
Colby Rasmus CF Age: 24 (to TOR)
Trever Miller RP Age: 38 (to CWS)
Brian TalletRP Age: 33 (to TOR)

P.J Walters  RP Age: 26 (to TOR)

Toronto Blue Jays trade:
Octavio Dotel RP Age: 37 (to STL)

Corey Patterson LF Age: 31 (t0 STL)
Marc Rzepczynski RP Age: 25 (to STL)
Zach Stewart RP Age: 24 (to CWS)

Jason Frasor RP Age: 33 (to CWS)

Chicago White Sox trade:

Edwin Jackson SP Age: 27 (to STL)

Mark Teahen 3B Age: 29 (to TOR)

Trade Review:
-A big 3 team trade goes down and a lot of new faces in new cities. The Cardinals were shopping young Colby Rasmus and the Blue Jays were right on it. The Blue Jays traded away pitching prospect Zach Stewart along with 3 of their RP’s. They got young CF Colby Rasmus who should pair well with Jose Bautista in the hitter friendly park, but fell out of favor in St. Louis because of attitude concerns. The Cardinals got young SP Edwin Jackson who will be a free agent at the end of the year along with RP Marc Rzepcynski along with additional players. The White Sox unloaded Mark Teahens contract and bid farewell to Edwin Jackson after trading young Daniel Hudson for him last year. In reutn they got Zach Stewart who was the centerpiece last off season in the Roy Halladay trade.
Winner: Toronto Blue Jays
Fantasy Analysis:
Colby Rasmus: The young CF didn't have problems offensively in St. Louis it was more in the clubhouse problems. Now hopefully a change in scenery will do him well, especially in the hitter friendly Rogers Centre. His fantasy value should see a slight bump the rest of the year.
Edwin Jackson: Jackson will see his stock rise going back to the NL and leaving hitter friendly U.S Cellular field and moving to more pitcher friendly Busch stadium. He will recieve more run support in St. Louis, and as a reult will get more Wins. Another player who will see a slight bump in fantasy value

7/26
Cincinnati Reds trade:
Jonny Gomes LF Age: 30

Washington Nationals trade:
Christopher Manno Hagerstown Suns RP (A)
Bill Rhinehart Harrisburg Senators OF (AA)

Review
-The Nationals have been seeking an additional outfielder for months now, and they get a cheap option in Jonny Gomes. Gomes was losing time to the younger duo of Fred Lewis and Chris Heisey. He was hitting an ugly .211 BA on the year but had 11 HR's and 31 RBI'sRhinehart. Rhinehart has had a career year in AA, but at this point his chances of making it to the majors at an older age, are slim. The Reds called up top prospect Yonder Alonso who will get some time in LF along with Heisey, and Fred Lewis

Winner: Cincinnati Reds

Fantasy Impact:
Yonder Alonso: Alonso was hitting .296 with 12 HR's and 56 RBI's in AAA Louisville. After playing LF the entire year he will stay there with the Reds, due to 1B being rightfully secured by Joey Votto. Alonso will split time in LF with Fred Lewis and Chris Heisey, but should get some good looks. He is worthy of owning in NL-Only Leagues, Dynasty Leagues and 16-20 team standard leagues.
Jonny Gomes: Gomes was slipping out of the LF platoon in Cincinnati, but hopefully a change of scenery will do GomesLaynce Nix, but he willd definitely get his AB's. He is only worth owning in NL-Only Leagues and 20 team leagues as a roational OF

7/20
Detroit Tigers trade:
Antonio Cruz West Michigan Whitecaps RP, (A)
Julio Rodriguez Lakeland Flying Tigers C, (Advanced A)

Kansas City Royals trade:
Wilson Betemit 3B Age: 29

Review
-The Tigers have wanted to upgrade at the hot corner position all season, and they finally get to do it with the addition of Wilson Betemit. Betemit was hitting .281 on they year with 3 HR's and 27 RBI's in semi-regular playing time. He will be a full time starter for the Tigers and gives them a decent bat to replace Don Kelly and Brandon Inge who were failing in a platoon role at 3B. The Royals brought in a nice hall with the additions of Antonio Cruz and Julio Rodriguez. Cruz is 19 years old and has been solid in Single A with a 3.11 ERA out of the pen in 75 innings. Rodriguez is a 21 year old catcher who has hit .283 on the year but only with 1 HR.

Winner:  Detroit Tigers

7/19
San Francisco Giants trade:
Henry Sosa SP, Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA)
Jason Stoffel RP, Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA)

Houston Astros trade:
Jeff Keppinger 2B/SS/3B Age:31

Review:
-The Giants have struggled with injuries this year in the infield. They lost starting 2B Freddy Sanchez in all likelihood for the year, and rookie Brandon Crawford has only hit .197 on the year at SS with Miguel Tejada playing 2B. Now the Giants bring in Keppinger, who was hitting .307 on the year for the Astros while starting at 2B. Keppinger right now is projected to be a Type A free agent which could help the Giants later on. The Astros got 2 young prospects who have both had nice seasons in Double-A Richmond. Sosa was formerly a top Giants prospect before injuries and command issues hurt his stock over the past 2 years. The Astros called up prospect Jose Altuve to play 2B.

Winner: San Francisco Giants
