What an eventful Week 5 it was for the NFL, filled with new records, major injuries, and the passing of a legend. Let's first start with the two (5-0) teams the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, both hailing from the NFC North. Neither time will see each other until Week 12, but this week each has a chance to continue their undefeated streak. Green Bay takes on the win less Rams, and the Lions take on another surprise team. The San Francisco 49ers are 4-1 and if you expected that you are either lying or crazy. Meanwhile the Texans lost Mario Williams, and the NFL lost the man who loved football more then anyone in Al Davis.
"Say What" Stats
13-2: Combined record of the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. WOW!
9: TD Receptions by Lions WR Calvin Johnson Jr. which is the most through 5 games in NFL history.
4,948: Rushing yards by Eagles QB Michael Vick. It is now the NFL record for QB's
740: Receiving yards by Patriots WR Wes Welker, the most ever by a WR through 5 games in NFL history.
1: Touchdowns by Carolina Panthers not named Cam Newton. Deangelo Williams broke a 69 yard run, to mark the first TD by anyone other then Newton, who has 12.
Controversial Call of the Week
It occurred during the New Orleans Saints. vs Carolina Panthers divisional game. With seconds remaining on the clock before halftime the Saints tried to rush their field goal team (with no time outs left) onto the field to make the 46 yard FG before time expired. They were unable to snap the ball in time, but Panthers coach Ron Rivera had called a TO with 2 seconds left. The Saints got a second chance, and John Kasay sent it through the uprights. It turned out to be the deciding factor as the Saints won 30-27.
So What Was Ron Rivera Thinking
-It turns out the Panthers apparently had 12 men on the field, which would have resulted into free time for the Saints to kick the Field Goal regardless. But it still has to deal with Ron Rivera making a crucial mistake. Situations like this have to be worked on in practice, the 3 points was the diffwer3ence between an L and a chance to get a W in Overtime. Ron Rivera deserves most of the blame for this, but as a first year head coach, he will learn from his mistake.
Injury Updates
Mario Williams OLB (HOU): The Texans just can't catch a break this year. They deal with injuries to Arian Foster in the first 3 weeks of the season, then when Foster comes back they lose All Pro WR Andre Johnson to a hamstring injury for 3 weeks. Now after a disappointing loss at home to the Raiders, the Texans will be without superstar Outside Linebacker Mario Williams who tore his pectoral muscle. It is a devastating injury for a team that can't catch a break.
Josh Morgan WR (SF): Everything seemed to go right for the 49ers in their 48-s trouncing of the Buccaneers, but nothing went right for WR Josh Morgan. Midway through the 4th quarter already leading 41-3. Morgan broke one of the bones in his right leg, and will likely be placed on Injured Reserve after having surgery this week. Now the 49ers will be without Morgan, after already losing Braylon Edwards for several weeks. It will only make things tougher as they take on the 5-0 Lions on Sunday.
Mike Tolbert RB (SD): Tolbert took a blow to the head in the 1st half of the Chargers game against the Broncos. Tolbert has a concussion and will go through the mandatory tests throughout the week before he is cleared to practice. The Chargers will have a bye this week so it is likely he will only miss a few days of practice. Meanwhile Ryan Mathews continues to be the workhorse carrying it 24 times for 125 yards on the ground.
Joseph Addai RB (IND): Addai suffered a right hamstring injury in Sundays game against the Chiefs. Tests will be done early in the week to reveal the severity of it, but the Colts are expecting to be without Addai in Week 6 against the Bengals. In Addai's place Donald Brown and Delone Carter are expected to split carries, but Brown should receive the larger load after carrying the ball 8 times for 38 yards after Addai left in the 1st half.

Defensive Player of the Week
Nick Barnett LB Buffalo Bills: In a big game against the "Dream Team" Philadelphia Eagles, former Packers LB Nick Barnett stepped up in a BIG way. He picked off Michael Vick twice and returned one 31 yards for a TD, with the second one sealing the game late in the 4th quarter.
Andrew Luck Sweepstakes
-In this new section I will highlight the team after each week who I think is the worst in the NFL and will get the No.1 pick for the rights to draft the most heralded QB in recent memory Stanford QB Andrew Luck.
After Week 5, I still believe the worst team in the NFL is the Miami Dolphins. They are (0-4) and of all the winless teams have looked the least likely to win a game. Meanwhile QB Chad Henne as not turned into anything close to what the Dolphins front office had imagined when they drafted him, and he is already out for the year with a dislocated shoulder. If the Dolphins do end up with the 1st overall pick, they will not be hesitant to take Andrew Luck.
Congrats Dolphins fans, after Week 5 I think you have the best odds to get Luck |
Rest In Peace Al Davis. You were one of the greatest football minds of all time and did so much for the game today that will never be forgotten. Your love for the game, your players, and your Raiders will never be matched. As the saying goes "Heroes are remembered but Legends never die"
